Knowing (Perspectives) KNOTs
Knowing KNOTs generally explore:
- perspectives on complex social, technical, environmental, political (et cetera) problems
- ways of knowing, being and understanding the world
- disciplinary perspectives and managing knowledge across different worldviews
Although Knowing KNOTs can be delivered in any format, these are likely to be delivered in panels, seminar, lecture, plenary, place-based and other formats that exchange ideas, perspectives and knowledge.
Learning Outcome
All Knowing KNOTs build capacity and map to the course learning outcome:
compare, contrast and apply concepts, arguments and evidence to transdisciplinary problems across scales
SoCIETIE Knowing KNOTs
The McCusker Institute will run a number of Knowing KNOTs through semester in a Panel format, bringing in Fellows, Affiliates and Guests to discuss complex societal issues. If you have a great idea for a panel topic or guest, please raise it in class.
Campus Knowing KNOTs
A number of specific Campus Knowing KNOTs will be developed as we build the program with friends, partners and opportunistic offerings across campus.
In the meantime, the following format can used to build a Campus Knowing KNOT:
- at least three hours spent attending public lectures, faculty talks, special events or other activity that involves academics or other recognised thought leaders on ANU campus
- the time may be accumulated at one event, or spread over several events, during the time you are enrolled in the course
- the topic must relate to SoCIETIE values
The maximum number of Campus Knowing KNOTs you can undertake per course is 2 points (i.e. 2 x 3 hours).
The default completion task for a Campus Knowing KNOT is a 200-word reflection. As a starting point, we encourage you to base the reflection on “a question that you asked at the event (or would have asked if there was time)”. We would love to see a photo of you at the event or social media post with the reflection.
Great places to find events for Campus Knowing KNOTs is the weekly On Campus newsletter, and by signing up to College and Institute newsletters.
If you follow the advice above, you do not need to get approval to have the KNOT count towards the course; however, you are welcome to check if you are unsure.
Propose a Knowing KNOT
You may propose your own Knowing KNOT using the same format, expectations and completion task as outlined under Campus Knowing KNOTs, but with an external or community event. For example, attendance at a public talk, event or conference off campus.
Please seek approval for a Proposed Knowing KNOT prior to attending the event.
