Summary
Students in ANU Solar Racing are encouraged to count their project time towards the SoCIETIE Initiative at any stage in the ANU Solar Racing team cycle (design, build, race, showcase, handover), while learning as a team member, or leading a team.
Time spent on the project can count for 'Doing' points (2-8 points for 20-80 hours of project work).
Preparation
Prior to commencing SoCIETIE hours on the project, please complete the Course Pathway Plan to outline your plans for the project time with respect to the other activities in the course.
What participants will learn
The World Solar Challenge is one opportunity to practice and collect Doing points. The activity may be reflective journaling before, during and after the Challenge, or other activities will be considered.
Students are encouraged to define a role/set of activities within ANU Solar Racing as their project. Priorities include:
- Race time: leading or participation activities related to the World Solar Challenge
- After the race: developing handover materials regarding any/every aspect of the team, such as composite manufacturing, mechanical design, budgeting, race logistics, partnerships.
- Before the race: making a contribution to the team in a technical or support area
For students not counting ‘race time’ as their project, other projects that have been used in the past include:
- leading the design of the electrical system
- undertaking mechanical design reviews
- developing a mental wellbeing plan for the team
- designing a schools outreach and engagement program
Advice
See the ANU Solar Racing Partner Page for more information about the partnership.
Completion
The Doing KNoT completion task for the project can be any of the following:
- Material created/prepared in undertaking the project (suited to pre-race development)
- Reflections or learning from the activity, such as a diary or journal (suited to on-race)
- Handover material for future teams (suited to post-race reflection)
Students completing a project with ANU Solar Car (20-80 hours) should include as Doing KNoT completion evidence no more than two pages including:
- A summary, description or reflection on the activities undertaken in the project (250-300 words)
- Photographs or other visual representations of the work undertaken may be included
- An appendix or link to any supplementary material that contains evidence of the work undertaken, such as designs, plans, handover documentation, et cetera. This may be your Portfolio.
