Project Outline

The World Solar Challenge is a massive effort for students involved in the initiative. Students in ANU Solar Racing are encouraged to count their project time towards the SoCIETIE Initiative at any stage in the ANU Solar Racing team cycle (design, build, race, showcase, handover), while learning as a team member, or leading a team. Priorities include:
  • Race time: leading or participation activities related to the World Solar Challenge
  • After the race: developing handover materials regarding any/every aspect of the team, such as composite manufacturing, mechanical design, budgeting, race logistics, partnerships.
  • Before the race: making a contribution to the team in a technical or support area

Other projects that have been used in the past include outside of the race cycle include:

  • leading the design of the electrical system
  • undertaking mechanical design reviews
  • developing a mental wellbeing plan for the team
  • designing a schools outreach and engagement program
Time spent on a defined aspect of the project can count towards the project component of the SoCIETIE course for credit.

Learning Statement

Students can expect to develop technical and management expertise while being part of a major student-led project.

Preparation

Please discuss the planned project with a Team Lead and ensure you have their support to run the project through this course.

Deliverables

Students completing a project with ANU Solar Car should include completion evidence no more than two pages such as:
  • links to work product or other material created/prepared in undertaking the project (suited to pre-race development)
  • reflections or learning from the activity, such as a diary or journal (suited to on-race)
  • handover material for future teams (suited to post-race reflection)

In addition, please consider preparing a Shareable Artefact with:

  • A summary, description or reflection on the activities undertaken in the project (250-300 words)
  • Photographs or other visual representations of the work undertaken may be included
  • An appendix or link to any supplementary material that contains evidence of the work undertaken, such as designs, plans, handover documentation, et cetera. This may be your Portfolio.
