SoCIETIE Project

The SoCIETIE Project is the application of your learning in the course to a real-world project. It is the opportunity for you to apply the skills and knowledge you have developed through the KNoTs in a real-world project that creates impact in your community.

Asessment

The SoCIETIE Project is a required component of the course, and it is assessed through the KNoT Completion Evidence. It may also be the source of inspiration for your Shareable Artefact.

Types of Projects

There are three main types of projects that students typically undertake in the SoCIETIE course, regardless of the pathway they choose:

The SoCIETIE Project: A transdisciplinary project that is offered during the semester-based courses. We work with a campus partner on a project that creates impact on campus. These projects typically involve a team of 3-5 students working on a project during weeks 6-10 for approximately 40 hours.

A McCusker Institute Project: A project that is initiated and supported by the McCusker Institute. These projects are typically focused on community needs and may involve working with a community partner. These projects are typically undertaken over a longer period of time (e.g., months) and may be collaborative or individual. You can find out more about current McCusker Institute projects here.

Your Own Project: A project that you initiate and lead. This could be a project that you are passionate about and want to pursue outside of the course, or it could be a project that you want to develop as part of your learning journey in the course. These projects can vary in scope and duration, but they should be designed to create impact in your community.

Students undertaking their own project in the past have worked on a wide range of projects, including:

  • Projects with community partners (e.g., local councils, non-profits, community groups)
  • Projects with Residential Halls (e.g., sustainability initiatives, community-building activities)
  • Projects with student clubs and societies (e.g., events, campaigns, initiatives)
  • Projects with the workplace (e.g., implementation, pilots, campaigns)
  • Projects with the arts (e.g., exhibitions, performances, installations)
  • Projects with research partners (e.g., research projects, publications, presentations)

The project may be an extension of a project that you may already be undertaking. The key factor is that the project must be defined through the Course Pathway Plan before commencing the hours within the course.
